The Rieslings of Best’s have a proven ability to mature gracefully for 20 years or more. This example is no exception and its youthful freshness is a good sign for its long life in the cellar. It will gather complex toasty aromas and flavours as the years pass. Enjoy with fish and chips by the sea in summer or a spicy fish curry by a fire in winter.
2017 Vintage Fantastic winter rains set the vineyards up for ideal spring growing conditions that saw great flowering and fruit set. The mild summer conditions and long ripening period (with some timely small rain events) ensured that the fruit matured in near perfect conditions for harvest. 2017 is a classic vintage that has more resemblance to those of the 80s and 90s than the vintages of this century.
The lime character carries onto the pallet, supported by a beautiful acid backbone, finishing with just enough of the lingering, but very dry, citrus flavours to make you go back for more & more. Alas we only had the one bottle. Oh well, we know how to fix that !!
We initially went looking for the steely mineral characters we are used to seeing in rieslings from other regions such as the Clare. Not there at all, but who cares. Seriously, it’s just delicious.
We tested it with a Thai massaman curry next up. Absolutely perfect - the lime and the acid matched the Thai flavours a treat. We just had to finish the bottle with dinner and once again were left wanting more.
A super fruit driven wine which is a perfect match for Asian food. In short, we are fans.
