Vintage Blog – Riesling all in and lots of hand sorting
A BIG WEEK in the winery and vineyards. All the Riesling is now in and showing some good varietal flavours. We are sorting some of the XO Thompson Family Shiraz block today and there are very good long juicy/ spicy flavours being detected.
We luckily missed the rain that fell heavily in some areas and the fruit is in very good condition. The Dolcetto from the 140+ old vines made it to the fermenter today. The little sweet one should make some good wine this year, we hope.
The Henry Best nursery block white was also picked, pressed and nick-named the SPC fruit salad. The table of truth revealed today that Alessio (our Italian stallion) is the self-proclaimed ‘king of rack’ or as we have now dubbed him, the Dolly Parton of the wine world! A rack is to remove the clear wine from the yeast lees, which Alessio did with great skill today.
Chris is imagining donuts pass before him after a long day at the sorting table and Anna and Brandon have discussed that the Thomson Family shiraz would drink well with peppered rare steak or spiced lamb cutlets accompanied by potatoes cooked in duck fat. Alternatively, wallaby brasola, boiled kangaroo head or raw prairie oysters were proposed. Mmmm? Anyone hungry.
Until next week.
