Best's Wines

A real insider’s wine, or another Best Kept Secret, Great Western Riesling is aromatic and flavoursome yet structured and spectacularly age-worthy. Best's Rieslings stand confidently alongside their acclaimed South Australian cousins. The Great Western region lends itself well to producing exceptional Rieslings – its diurnal weather patterns (warm days/cold nights) work well for this varietal. Some of our original nursery plantings can be traced back to Germany, so there's a significant history and pedigree in the root stock of Great Western Riesling.

Grown on the sandy loams of the Concongella Creek and the Rhymney Vineyard sites, and occasionally from selected local vineyards, Best’s Riesling shows the intensity and finesse that are hallmarks of the Great Western region. The wine is made to show true varietal characteristics, achieved by letting the pristine fruit shine above all else. It is cold fermented in stainless steel tanks, retaining the fruit’s inherent aromatics and acidity. Balance, texture and fruit flavour make for an accessible, food-friendly wine. And while made to drink now, it will definitely age for many years to come. We can testify that Best’s Great Western Rieslings from the 1970s are drinking superbly now.

Australian Wine Review, October 2015
‘From a vintage that started cool and dry with spring frosts before a dry and warm season. Crops were low. The elevated Rhymney vineyard was the pick for Riesling fruit this year. Clearly the product of a warm and dry vintage, there's an extra level of juiciness this vintage. There's yellow apple, lemon and green melon on the nose, over a palate that is round and full with a twist of residual sugar and a perfectly sprightly finish. Nice wine, with a real mouth filling fullness without losing shape. RS is balanced too. Drink well chilled and young methinks, though it will go for ages. Another very smart release
Rating 92/100.

Regan Drew,
‘The smells jump out of the glass with lime skins, black tea, musk and boiled lemon lolly sour/sweetness. Quite high acidity but it never becomes shrill. Quite high acidity but it never becomes shrill. There’s lovely creamy lemon fleshiness to this wine which balances and plumps out the lime and green apple. The Great Western region boasts some of Australia’s top marque Rieslings, and this can be counted amongst them.’

Gourmet Traveller
‘It's intensely aromatic with florals, sweet fruit and a hint of guava. Highly appealing, dainty aromas of honeysuckle, lime and talc. The palate is brimming with sweet lemon flavours and mouth-watering acidity. The sweet fruit/acid balance is spot on, there’s a great length, too.’

James Halliday 2019 Wine Companion
Bright straw-green, fuller than many of its vintage peers.  The length of the palate is exceptional, as is the fluid line of the intertwined citrus fruit and acidity, with lime and Meyer lemon.  The result is a riesling that will be drunk before its due time, and I would be happy to join forces tonight.  Rating: 95 points   To 2032
