House Block Riesling
The block of Riesling situated behind the winery was planted in 1978 on deep sandy clay loams. The block gives great varietal character and can develop good flavour at a low level of sugar ripeness.
2016 House Block Riesling
The Riesling fruit flavours were so good in 2016 that we picked slightly earlier than usual and separated an amazing parcel of fruit from our House Block in the winery in order to produce a different style of Riesling with a more Germanic tasting profile (often called Kabinett style).
2017 House Block Riesling
Fantastic winter rains set the vineyards up for ideal spring growing conditions that saw great flowering and fruit set. The mild summer conditions and long ripening period (with some timely small rain events) ensured that the fruit matured in near perfect conditions for harvest. 2017 is a classic vintage that has more resemblance to those of the 80s and 90s than the vintages of this century
“Sourced from 33-year-old vines grown at Best’s winery flanking the owner’s house, hence the name, this is my favourite Riesling at the moment. It’s so delicious on its own - a Kabinett-style with the residual sugar balancing out the precise, chalky natural acidity. It’s also full of floral aromas and a touch of citrus that follow through on the palate, minerally, stony, quite a defined yet gentle wine. A great match to spicy noodle dishes or Japanese.”
