Best’s high-flying fight against frost

There are some challenges in viticulture that are hard to plan for, and the devastating black frost of 4 November 2017 was one that took its toll. Despite having frost fans set up in the vineyard, the sudden onslaught of a cold burst of air that immediately settled on Best’s Concongella vineyard wiped out a large percentage of our fruit. The resulting 2018 harvest was decimated. If you’ve not heard the story, we wrote about the impact of the frost in a previous post back in early December 2017.

Does drinking wine cause headaches?

There are many theories surrounding the effects of wine on wellbeing and health, and we’re often asked by visitors why drinking wine – particularly red wine – can bring on a headache. Apart from the obvious reason (over-indulgence combined with not drinking enough water, perhaps), there are a few factors to consider. Surprisingly, the one component that gets the worst rap is highly unlikely to be the culprit. 2019 Vintage Report

There’s always a collective sigh of relief when the grapes are safely in the winery and our winemaking team can start making the next vintage of Best’s wines. Slightly lower yields in 2019 have resulted in more concentration, but the perfume and persistence of these wines will ensure this is a great vintage in Great Western.
