Best's Wines

2018 Pinot Noir

2018 Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir was first planted in the Nursery Block at Best’s in the  late 1860’s. The original Best’s plantings are now thought to be the oldest Pinot Noir vines in the world, and one of these clones is thought to exist nowhere else in the world.

After the spring frosts of 2017, that desimated our Concongella vineyard where 2/3rds of Pinot Noir is grown, this wine has stood up with just over 90% of the fruit coming from this vineyard. The balance was the only fruit picked off our Concongella vineyard in 2018.

Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
Picked primarily from our Salvation Hills vineyard. This site is on the southern side of the hills to Great Western, is more elevated, south west facing and typically cooler than our Concongella vineyard.
Production Notes
Fermented in small and large batches before aging in French barriques, hogsheads and some puncheons for 10 months. Up yto 20% new was used.
Other Notes
The vineyard got off to a great start, but dry conditions throughout the spring triggered a devastating frost on 4th November. The grapes on the lower vineyards were lost, but those on higher elevations where largely unaffected. Apart from a few warm days in January the conditions were excellent and perfect ripening weather continued long into the Autumn.

Nice Pinot. Lovely red fruit flavours. Slightly earthy but still very fresh. Look forward to trying in another couple of years time. Excellent value for the price range.
