2017 Nursery Block Dry Red

2017 Nursery Block Dry Red

Made from Henry Best’s first plantings of nearly 150 years ago, the ancient Nursery Block is a veritable vineyard museum with 39 separate varieties, 8 remaining unknown and unnamed to this day.

Light to medium bodied but has a multitude of crunchy and vibrant flavours with a savoury, velvety and moreish finish. A great, easy-drinking red that would pair with a variety of cuisine. Try it slightly chilled (14˚C) with Tomato Gazpacho soup.

This is a delicious wine, bursting with flavour and personality, displaying the unique 'fruit-filled' characters of this so very under-rated region. The nose is a full spectrum of fruits, red, blue, even peachey, with just the hint of aniseed hovering on the horizon, an aspect I always associate with great wine. It's not 'full' bodied, but not delicate either, quite simply, a pleasure to drink.

If you can get past the "What variety is it?" questions to just appreciate a wine for what it is and where it is from, this delivers the goods. It smells of red fruits (plums, cherries and berries) and spice, which all flow onto a palate that's matched with hints of savouriness in more exotic spice, dried herb and subtle char. It's delicate, lighter bodied, but with lots of complexity. Every time you smell or taste it gives something new. My partner and I enjoyed this with good Chinese at a Melbourne restaurant. The staff ogled it and wondered what it was. I said it was complicated! At the end of the day, it worked beautifully with the Shanghai Duck and contributed to a wonderful night. Fantastic wine!

The Nursery Dry Red is unique and unlike anything else you can try coming out of Australia now. It fondly reminds us of kooky Aunt Penny (we all have one) who only shows up to family Christmas every few years, but when she does visit, she brings the best presents! It is medium bodied with a vibrant, violet hue and powerful, spicy aromatics with lots of red fruit. This is a wine that is better with food. It is high in acid, so we think it would pair well with anything tomato-based, something spicy or a homestyle lasagne. It can be drunk now, but it will also benefit from a few more years of cellaring.

A good solid wine. Light but not super fruity like Pinot Noir. It doesn't have the same red fruitiness but is well suited to people who like their lighter reds. The savoury favourings are on show here and is spectacular if you were in the mood for such. Definitely worth trying as haven't tried much like it and would work well for someone who wants to expand their horizons but not go super heavy. A must for any good cellar to pop out when the mood suits.

This wine is absolutely fantastic. Light, fruity, simple yet complex at the same time. We had this wine with an Asian dish at home and had everyone talking about it. Bests really know how to craft fabulous wines and this is definitely one of them. Drink now but pop a few in the cellar for later.
