The Team at Best’s Great Western

The New Great Western Vintages are in Town!

This top trio of wines reflects the classic characteristics of their varietals, with the defining hallmarks of the Grampians’ Great Western region.

2012 Best's Great Western Bin 1 Shiraz

The new vintage of the Bin 1 release has been hotly anticipated for a while now, given the popularity of last year’s Jimmy Watson-winning Bin 1. Our winemaker Justin Purser believes the drier vintage conditions have benefited this wine, giving it richer, riper flavours than the 2011, with black instead of white pepper, and darker fruits instead of red. The riper tannins make it more mouth filling, but it remains a medium-bodied drop with the elegance and refinement that makes it a perfect food match.

2013 Best's Great Western Riesling

Unlike the 2012 vintage, which had a riper level of fruit sweetness due to delayed picking at harvest, the 2013 Riesling is fresh and crisp with balanced notes of melon, citrus and floral, typical of Rieslings produced in the Grampians region. The grapes for this wine were picked when the flavours came into balance with the acid, reflecting the vintage and the Grampians’ terroir.

2012 Best's Great Western Cabernet Sauvignon

The Great Western Cabernet Sauvignon is one of our Best Kept Secrets – it’s sometimes lost in the adulation of the Bin 1 Shiraz. But the elegance of the 2012 vintage shows just how good this wine can be. It has benefited from the vintage conditions of 2012, which were just right for this varietal, and displays classic briary fruit aromas and impressive length of flavour on the palate. It’s great drinking right now but will improve after time in the cellar, too.
