What a whirlwind! It’s been the shortest vintage period we can recall at Best’s – the recent hot weather meant that we had to work around the clock to get the grapes picked and into the winery, and despite a very tired winemaking and viticulture team, the early results are looking fabulous!

We can't wait until the weekend of the Grampians Grape Escape, 4-5 May. Look out for the great dinners and lead-up events, including their 150 years of Winemaking in the Grampians festival dinner at which our own Viv Thomson will be speaking.

Sydney Royal Wine Show - Chardonnay Gold Medal Win

Chardonnay was one of the first varietals planted in Best's Concongella Vineyard in the 1970s, even though cuttings were extremely hard to come by at the time. While it’s not the varietal for which Best's is most famous, our Chardonnay certainly has a distinctive style that’s getting itself noticed by the wine industry and consumers alike.

Made in small quantities, our 2011 Great Western Chardonnay recently won a gold medal with the highest points awarded to any current-vintage Chardonnay at the 2013 Macquarie Group Sydney Royal Wine Show. Our Chardonnay is picked early to ensure good acidity with no excess sugar - a feature seen in other Chardonnay styles from the Grampians region. The wine does not undergo any malolactic fermentation and is partially fermented in stainless steel with the use of wild yeasts. It is aged in 100 per cent French Oak (20-30 per cent is new oak).

This Chardonnay is a fabulous food wine - just right with a fatty goat's cheese like a demi-sec (half-dry) Crottin de Chavignol or Pouligny-Saint-Pierre. It would also be worth trying with a few fresh Coffin Bay oysters.

...Chardonnay was one of the first varietals planted in the Concongella Vineyard in the 1970s even though cuttings were extremely hard to come by at the time. Our winemaker has considerable experience with Chardonnay, having worked in Burgundy, France, Chardonnay’s original home.

Vintage 2013 Update

What a vintage it’s been. We didn't start picking the grapes until 20 February and by Easter the entire vintage process will be done and dusted. It won’t be long until the wine has finished its fermentation process, is pressed, put into barrels or vats and we start preparing the 2012 reds and 2013 whites for bottling. Such is the nature of agriculture, and not even Viv Thomson, who has just finished his 52nd vintage, can ever recall such a short vintage at Best’s.

Our winemaker Justin Purser is thrilled with the quality of the fruit coming in. While the yields are down in the dry-grown blocks, the quality and the concentration of the fruit is good.

2011 Bin 1 Shiraz Continues to Win

Best’s 2011 Bin 1 Great Western Shiraz has been named Australia’s Wine of the Year 2013, winning the highly prized Fine Wine Partners Trophy. This accolade goes to the wine that has been the star performer at all the major Australian wine shows over the preceding 12 months. 

Our winemaker Justin Purser said: “Best’s is thrilled and honoured to be the recipient of the 2013 Fine Wine Partners Trophy. It is incredible that out of 17,000 wines, the 2011 Best's Bin 1 Shiraz was chosen as the winner. This wine is a great advocate of the Best's Great Western style and we're glad the judges got it right.” Click here to read more.
 
Unfortunately we’ve sold out of the 2011 Bin 1 Shiraz at cellar door, but the 2012 will be released 1 September.

Dates for your Diary

    Grampians Grape Escape – Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 May 2013
This weekend is the premier event on the calendar for the Grampians region, and of course Best's will be involved. Look out for celebrity chef Poh Ling Yeow, from MasterChef Australia, and the great lead-up events, like dinners and tastings. The weekend makes for a great opportunity to explore the best that the Grampians has to offer.
