2012 Vintage Blog: Anyone for Swallow Pie?

Great Western is experiencing some beautiful autumn weather at the moment, with very cool crisp nights and clear, warm sunny days; ideal for ripening Shiraz grapes to the optimum balance of flavour and freshness. We are having more of a battle against the birds at the moment. Those pesky balls of colour, mirth and grace are gorging on ripe grapes until their bellies burst, but they still come back for more. When i was winemaking in Italy, I asked the question if they have any issues with birds in the vineyards? “No, the farmers eat them all”, was the reply. Does anyone have a wine match for a swallow pie?  Continue »

Making white wine from Shiraz… it can be done: Viv Thomson’s tribute to Trevor Mast

It was with much sadness that we lost a great friend earlier in the month with the passing of Trevor Mast. Trevor was the first winemaker employed by Best’s in 1975 and a big part in building the reputation of Shiraz from the Grampians on a global scale. Here’s a short tribute from our Chairman Viv Thomson commenting on the life and times of a great friend.  Continue »

Vintage 2012 kick off: Bringing in the fruit…

The sun is back out and spirits are high after an inch of rain put everything on hold for a few days. We managed to pull in our entire Rhymney ‘MV6 clone’ Pinot Noir block before the rain fell and it looks like beautiful pristine pinot noir should. We hope this will make something special.  Continue »

Who put the red wine in the fridge?

Love a red with oomph but need something cold to imbibe this summer? Don’t mind a bit of fizz to add some festive cheer? Sparkling Shiraz is the way to go and our 2009 Sparkling Shiraz is just the right wine for the silly season. Adam Wadewitz talks about this wine in this short video.  Continue »

The best Pinot Gris (we’ve ever made)

Well actually truth be told it’s the first Bests first Pinot Gris (doesn’t that still mean it’s also the best ever?) Its not a wine we have made before but from time to time we come across small parcels of grapes that are so exceptional that we just must make them into wine. This was the case with some Pinot Gris vines that are planted and grown by a local vigneron on cool slopes, a short drive south west of our Concongella Vineyard.  Continue »

An Australian Icon: Bin O Shiraz

What makes a wine iconic? Many wines would like to claim icon status but we believe we have something unique with our Bin O Shiraz given the source of the fruit and history of this wine. Bin 0 Shiraz has been produced at Best’s Great Western since the late 1800s, although the actual date of the first Bin 0 Shiraz is lost in the annals of time. It is known, however, that ‘Bin 0’ has been used on the label for over 100 years.  Continue »
