Viv Thomson awarded Victorian Legend of the Vine 2017

On Friday 20 October, 2017, Best’s patriarch Eric Vivian Thomson, known as Viv Thomson among his wine industry peers and his family and friends, was announced Legend of the Vine, Victoria, at the annual WCA Royal Melbourne Wine Show Awards Lunch. Viv received his Legend of the Vine status for his service to the wine industry as one of Australia’s longest serving winemakers.

Decanting Young Reds

Growing up in a family in which wine is the backbone of our existence has taught me a thing or two about the enjoyment of wine. One thing I’ve learned along the way is that decanting younger red wines (screw top or cork) always improves their flavour. From my experience at cellar door, holding tastings and at home, I’ve almost always seen a benefit from allowing a young red wine breathe; and the younger, more tannic the wine, the more time it needs to “breathe”.

2017 Thomson Family Shiraz

The 2014 Thomson Family Shiraz was awarded the ‘Wine Of the Year’ for the 2017 Halliday Wine Companion and the 2017 was awarded 99 points for the 2020 Wine Companion. Slightly closed at first, this wine evolves and changes in the glass with layers of aroma including red flowers, crushed pepper berries, fennel, charcuterie, cocoa, dark cherry and blackberry to name a few.
