Best's Wines

Limited Release Wines

To commemorate Best’s 150th birthday, winemaker Justin Purser kept aside small parcels of grapes over previous years to craft an exclusive selection of wines.

These special small parcel wines celebrate Best’s history, traditions and the age of our vines. They are closed under cork with a wax seal. Wine club members receive free freight Australia wide.

The Concongella is a replica of the original red styles made in Great Western in the late 1800s. Portions of our original 1868 plantings of Old Vine Pinot Meunier, Old Vine Shiraz and Old Vine Dolcetto were co-fermented and macerated over several weeks during the 2013 vintage, before being basket pressed and matured in oak.

Tasting note: brilliant dark red in colour with a ruby hue. Complex and gamey aromas with broody dark fruits, liquored cherries, liquorice, freshly tanned leather, undergrowth and roasted woody spices. Rich and opulent flavours flow along the palate with the firm but fine-grained and seamless tannins.

Sparky is the nickname of Marcus Thomson, the youngest of the Thomson siblings, who was born the year these vines were planted, 1970. At 45 years of age, these vines are at their peak. Half of this wine is sealed under cork; the other half under glass. The cork will add complexity to the evolution of the wine; the glass stopper will seal the wine’s freshness for longer.

Tasting note for wine under cork: inky dark red with a purple hue. Lifted and heady aromas of dark concentrated fruits, aniseed, saffron, pepper, black olives, cinnamon and violets. Rich and flowing with a voluptuous but medium body and super long aromatic tannins.

This wine is only released a couple of times a decade, with only 30 dozen produced this year, it really is something unique.

The Pigsty Vineyard was planted in 1868. There are 141 Pinot Noir vines dispersed amongst the Pinot Meunier vines in this vineyard which are typically harvested together to make Old Vine Pinot Meunier. These ancient Pinot Noir vines were propagated from cuttings taken from the original Best’s Nursery Block vines, also known as Best’s Clone Pinot Noir.     Ideal drinking now but it will reward cellaring in ideal conditions for 15 years or more.

This sparkling wine was inspired by Christine Mary Thomson (C.M.T) who for many years has worked alongside her husband Viv, continuing the Thomson family traditions as custodians of Best's Wines at Great Western.

Made from the traditional varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier and then disgorged after four years on lees.   Disgorged in September 2020, therefore we recommend you hold off drinking until later in the year, although it is great drinking now, it does take some time for dosage to intergrate.

With only 4,000 bottles made it won't last long, with the next one not due for release until 2024.
