A new comer to the Best's stable. First made in 2015 when a local grower approached us with some spare parcel of high quality fruit. Our winemaker Justin Purser saw and seized an opportunity to make a unique wine. The fruit comes from two vineyards that are on the southern side range to the south of Great Western. One of the vineyards was owned and operated by the late Kim Ludvigson.
Kim pasted away on his vineyard in 2014, and we, and we felt it fitting to name the wine 'Ludvigson' Shiraz Viognier. Kim was a beloved member of the local wine community and well known and respected amongst his peers in the wine industry.
Justin ferments the Shiraz and Viognier together, a technique he learnt from his time in France, the effect is a slightly brighter coloured, more rounded and aromatic shiraz when it's young. Only a small amount of Viognier is needed, typically less than 5%. As the wines age, the Shiraz character dominates and will age and develop as a straight Shiraz.
