Best's Great Western 2016 Riesling

Riesling vines were first planted as part of Henry Best’s ‘Nursery Block’ vineyard in the 1860s. From subsequent plantings in 1944 and 1978, Riesling has become a significant part of our regime.

The Riesling vines from Great Western produce flavoursome, elegantly structured, spectacularly age-worthy Rieslings which stand confidently alongside some of the most outstanding Australian examples of the variety. In recent times, the style has evolved to match the continental climatic conditions to a beautifully balanced wine with texture and aromatics.

Wine Profile

Colour                 Pale straw with a green and gold hue.

Bouquet              Lifted aromas of kaffir lime and honeysuckle with a background of red apple and musky spices.

Palate                   Intense lime flavours with a slippery mouthfeel and a fresh mineral finish.

Cellaring             The Rieslings of Best’s have a proven ability to mature gracefully for 20 years or more. This example is no exception and its   youthful freshness is a good sign for its long life in the cellar. It will gather complex toasty aromas and flavours as the years pass. Enjoy with a Moreton Bay Bug Ravioli.

Vintage                An early budburst and warm spring set the vineyard up well with good fruit set and lush balanced canopies. The summer was warm and dry and some exposed vines struggled. The short and early vintage with cold nights and warm days produced pristine Riesling grapes and rich varietal flavours in the wines.

I enjoyed the freshness and light finish of this wine. My friends and I enjoyed it chilled with a seafood risotto and it complimented it well with it's hint of sweet fruit and no strong aftertaste. As well it was smoth on the tongue, which worked well with a semi-heavy meal. It reminded me of summer holidays by the sea or sunny, winter days and long lunches. I am a long time fan of white wine and this riesling is now amongst my favourite picks!

Honey and toasty aromas. Has a silky consistency. While I could taste honey, the wine didn't feel heavy or overly sweet, it has a lime citrus freshness in the background which balances it out, so is incredibly easy to drink. It complimented my prawn laksa really well. Overall a highly recommended white wine. I would like to see how it tastes after a few years in the cellar. I am going to treat myself to a few more bottles of this riesling!

Summary: floral, sweet, lime, zesty, a good food wine.

Waffle: straight up I am not a sweet Riesling fan, it's not sweet sweet but too sweet for me (some may say that I am sweet enough but I digress).

This wine is quite versatile and is a great food wine, it won't overpower and simply accompany your tasty meal which could be thai take away like myself, seafood or a lovely pasta.

I would like to try this wine again with some age on it as it feels very young.

Elegant and dances over your pallet enjoy sweet Riesling fans
