Best's Great Western 2014 Thomson Family Shiraz

The Thomson family are now in their fifth generation in Great Western and are justifibly proud of this wine that carries the family name. In 1920, the Thomson family purchased Best's Great Western and have continued as vigerons ever since.

Henry Best first planted the Concongella vineyard at Great Western in 1867 and the Thomson Family Shiraz is produced from those original vines. This wine was handpicked and hand crafted using traditional methods of open fermentation and gentle basket pressing then aged in French oak casks in the underground cellars.

Wine Profile

Colour         Very dark red with a purple hue.

Bouquet      The wine opens slowly to unveil a heady mixture of concentrated and broody dark fruits, potpourri, bitter chocolate, intense warm spices, black olives and fine grained perfumed oak.

Palate          The essence of the vineyard is displayed with powerful, yet medium bodied flavours of liqueur cherry and warm spices. A graphite minerality and age worthy velvety tannins draw out the long and savoury finish.

Cellaring     This wine needs time to reveal its true character, 5 - 20yrs+. It would be a great accompaniment to Slow Braised Beef Short Ribs with a sticky red wine sauce, served with creamy garlic mashed potatoes and steamed fresh seasonal vegetables. This wine benefits from decanting 1 hour prior to serving.

Vintage        A relatively cool season apart from a mid-summer heat wave. Although yields were much lower than normal, good vineyard management ensured the grapes ripened fully and had lots of complex flavours and balanced acidity.
