To commemorate Best’s 150th birthday, winemaker Justin Purser has been keeping aside small parcels of grapes over the last few years to craft an exclusive selection of wines, which will be released on 18 May.

In our 150th year, these wines celebrate Best’s history, traditions and the age of our vines. These special “small parcel” wines, closed under cork with a wax seal, are as rare as hen’s teeth. Wine club members will receive free freight Australia wide.

2013 The Concongella

The Concongella is a replica of the original red styles made in Great Western in the late 1800s. Portions of our original 1868 plantings of Old Vine Pinot Meunier, Old Vine Shiraz and Old Vine Dolcetto were co-fermented and macerated over several weeks during the 2013 vintage, before being basket pressed and matured in oak.

Tasting note: brilliant dark red in colour with a ruby hue. Complex and gamey aromas with broody dark fruits, liquored cherries, liquorice, freshly tanned leather, undergrowth and roasted woody spices. Rich and opulent flavours flow along the palate with the firm but fine-grained and seamless tannins.

2014 PSV 141 Pinot Noir

Planted in 1868 and believed to be the oldest Pinot Noir vines in the world, these 141 individual vines are intermingled in a vineyard of Pinot Meunier. Carefully selected bunches of grapes were sealed in a closed vessel for three months before being basket pressed and matured in a bespoke 90L octave of French oak.

Tasting note: very bright crimson in colour with a deep scarlet hue. An intense perfume including a range of sweet spices, dark red fruits, rose petals and fermented meats. Succulent and juicy red fruit flavours of intensity and purity with long silky tannins.

2014 Sparky’s Block Shiraz

Sparky is the nickname of Marcus Thomson, the youngest of the Thomson siblings, who was born the year these vines were planted, 1970. At 45 years of age, these vines are at their peak. Half of this wine is sealed under cork; the other half under glass. The cork will add complexity to the evolution of the wine; the glass stopper will seal the wine’s freshness for longer.

Tasting note: Under cork: inky dark red with a purple hue. Lifted and heady aromas of dark concentrated fruits, aniseed, saffron, pepper, black olives, cinnamon and violets. Rich and flowing with a voluptuous but medium body and super long aromatic tannins.

Drink in two to 40 years

Under glass stopper: as above, but slightly more closed and backward.

1999 FHT Shiraz Museum Release

The 1999 "FHT" follows in the widely acclaimed reputation of fine Shiraz produced from grapes grown exclusively on Best's Concongella Vineyard. The label design is almost an exact replica of Henry Best’s 1800s label.

Viv Thomson notes: “As a result of severe spring frosts in 1998, the 1999 vintage was reduced to 20% of our average harvest. The meager yield combined with ideal ripening conditions produced a wine, which I consider unique, and comparable only with the best vintages of Shiraz produced from the Concongella Vineyard. As such we have noted this vintage with the initials F.H.T. in memory of my late father Frederick Hamill Thomson.”

Tasting notes: lifted and intense bouquet of warm violets, cedar and cherry. White pepper dominates the palate providing length and roundness with rich dark chocolate, plums, raspberry and cherry undertones, producing a very complex and enjoyable wine.
